Implementing an Energy Management Plan not only helps the environment but it also plays a vital role in maintaining a business’ economic viability and establishes creditability with business sustainability stakeholders. The Energy Plan provides a holistic review of a facility’s energy use characteristics and provides a road map to implement the most effective methods to reduce energy use, thereby reducing operating costs and carbon footprint and establishing a cornerstone for sustainability.

To develop an Energy Plan, it is necessary to understand the facility’s energy use characteristics and evaluate:

  • Alternative Energy Suppliers and Rate Schedules to ensure the facility is utilizing the best rates possible;

  • Load Management Options, including Demand Reduction, to reduce demand costs and Demand Response Capacity which pays facilities that reduce their electrical consumption during periods of high demand;

  • Conservation efforts to identify and evaluate energy consumption opportunities;

  • Available rebates and tax credits; and

  • Potential distributed energy opportunities.

This process will generate a list of recommended, cost-effective energy efficiency measures and facility upgrades that will provide a road map to reduce energy use, operating expenses, carbon footprint, and, in many cases, improve the health and productivity of the building's occupants. Each of the identified opportunities will be justified using life-cycle cost methods, specifically net present value analysis that weigh initial capital cost and future operating and maintenance cost.

In addition, identified energy saving equipment changes may be eligible for utility and/or state energy program rebates and tax credits. These incentives are designed to offset apportion of the added cost of purchasing qualified energy-efficient equipment.

develop an Energy Management Plan that will provide an energy saving road map which identifies facility improvement projects that are cost-effective and meet return-on-investment goals.

Energy Use Surveys

Evaluation of a facility energy use characteristics including:

  • Demand reduction
  • Rate schedules
  • Physical plant operations
  • Lighting types and needs
  • Major energy consuming equipment
  • Energy baselines for heating and cooling seasons
  • Energy/demand rate structures
  • Energy use profiles
  • Alternate energy options

Engineering and Operations Analysis

Review of facility systems (i.e. HVAC, lighting, energy management, etc.) to determine if further efficiencies can be realized including:

  • HVAC equipment, operation and sequencing
  • Air handler startup, operation and economizer sequencing
  • Lighting and energy management system operation
  • Fuel switching strategies
  • Light balancing and replacement

Project Analysis and Payback

Financial analysis of potential energy saving projects based on project costs, available rebates and potential energy savings.

Purchase Options and Programs

Review of utility purchase and billing categories.
